Greendrinks organizers launch retail-based event

The organizers of the monthly networking event for environmentally conscious people in Portland, Greendrinks, are planning to launch their first "joycott," the opposite of a boycott.

The plan is to encourage many people to patronize one business on one day -- Feb. 12 in this case -- to swamp the business with sales. In return, the business must reinvest some percentage of that day's profits into environmental upgrades. "The consumers get to help a business go green, and the business gets extra dough to make the changes that will save them money and showcase their environmental efforts," a Greendrinks press release states.

The location will be announced tomorrow, according to the Greendrinks website. But the Greendrinks organizers have let it leak that the business will be one of the local markets on the Portland peninsula. The market that pledges to reinvest the highest percentage of its joycott profits will be selected to participate, according to the website.
