Greenlight Maine, an upcoming weekly TV show in which Maine entrepreneurs can vie to win a minimum prize of $100,000, said it has named 44 quarterfinalists that will compete to move on to the next stage of the competition, where they will be pared to 26 semifinalists.
“The applicants were really high quality and there were a really high number of them for a short period,” Jess Knox, founder of Maine Startup & Create Week, told Mainebiz. “We’re really excited about the geographic reach of the companies, from Kittery and Berwick to Madawaska and Caribou.” Entrants had to be Maine residents, he said.
Knox told Mainebiz earlier that the quarterfinalists will pitch in person on June 27 in Portland during Maine Startup & Create Week, which started Monday.
The final 26 will then move on to the TV show, which will be in a format similar to ABC's "Shark Tank." It will launch on WCSH6 and WLBZ2 on Sept. 12 and run through 2016.
Among the quarterfinalists is Portland-based Rapport IO, a sustainability software company that recently won the Top Gun Showcase $10,000 prize and was selected as a semifinalist in a regional cleantech business competition.
There were 86 total entries, Knox said. The entries came via initial registration on GreenlightMaine.com and subsequent online and live casting call events.
Greenlight Maine partnered with Knox, Blackstone Accelerates Growth and Don Gooding, executive director of Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development, for the initial selection process.
Greenlight Maine is the brainchild of Portland Media Group, a custom content and production company founded by Brian Corcoran, who also is president of Shamrock Sports & Entertainment; Nat Thompson, former president of Maine Radio and Television Co. and former owner/producer at WCSH6; and Con Fullam, an executive TV producer and music composer.
