GridSolar, the Portland company offering to install hundreds of acres of solar panels in Maine as a rival proposal to Central Maine Power's proposed $1.5 billion in transmission line upgrades, has come to its first agreement with a municipality to build solar panels on city-owned land.
The Saco City Council recently unanimously approved GridSolar's option to enter into a 20-year lease with the city to install solar panels on land adjacent to a former city landfill. If GridSolar's proposal is approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission, which is also currently considering CMP's Maine Power Reliability Program, GridSolar would lease the land for $25,000 a year and pay property taxes on all improvements to the property, according to a press release from the company.
GridSolar has proposed to install 100 megawatts of solar generation over the next 5 years near Maine communities that use a lot of power in the summer. The company is continuing discussions with other landowners and communities for similar installations.
