Grist mill to open in former Somerset Co. jail

The former Somerset County jail purchased for $65,000 in 2009 by two area entrepreneurs will reopen its doors as a grist mill this weekend.

MPBN reported that owners Steven Dionne and Amber Lambke are hoping to revitalize a tradition of grain production in an area that in the mid-1800s produced around 240,000 bushels of wheat.

Dionne and Lambke told MPBN that they expect the new mill will produce 600 tons of organic grain per year and will process wheat, oats, spelt, rye and buckwheat using millstone equipment shipped over from Austria.

According to MPBN, the effort is part of a revitalization along the Kennebec River in Skowhegan, where since 2005 the group Main Street Skowhegan has invested more than $4 million in downtown projects to open 21 new businesses.
