A nonprofit group opposed to a wind farm on Spruce Mountain intends to file an appeal of a permit issued for the project last month by the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Rufus Brown, an attorney representing Woodstock-based Friends of Spruce Mountain, told the Sun Journal he intends to file an appeal Wednesday of the permit issued by the DEP to Massachusetts-based Patriot Renewables to build a 10-turbine, 20-megawatt wind farm along the ridgeline of Spruce Mountain. The group is concerned about health effects of living near wind turbines, he said.
In March, voters in Woodstock defeated a proposed moratorium on wind farm development. Tomorrow, voters in nearby Dixfield will be asked to consider a zoning change on their local ballot that would restrict wind farm development on Colonel Holman Mountain, according to the paper, where Patriot Renewables has proposed a 13-turbine wind farm. The company has proposed projects in Carthage and Canton, as well.
