Growing resort developer to open another cottage property in Kennebunk

With a streak of similar projects in the works, Maine hotelier Tim Harrington is nearly finished renovating a cottage resort in Kennebunk and has plans to open in June.

The property, at 195 Sea Road, will debut as the Wanderer, with 17 cottages redesigned “for the modern, on-the-go traveler,” according to a news release.

The property is owned and operated by Lord & Harrington LLC, the company that also founded Batson River Brewing & Distilling.

The redone resort, close to Kennebunk's beaches, will be managed by Atlantic Hospitality, which also oversees Sandy Pines Campground in Kennebunkport, the Lincoln Hotel in Biddeford, Salt Cottages in Bar Harbor and the Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor.

“We created the Wanderer for people who want it all — a luxurious retreat with the amenities of a resort that's close to everything," said Harrington.

Bamboo and rattan are among the elements in the redesign of 17 guest cottages.

The redesign was by Mark Cotto, Atlantic Hospitality’s creative director. The design aims to evoke a “laid-back surf lodge” combined with a New England aesthetic.

Design elements include exposed wood walls, shiplap boards, brass lighting, vaulted ceilings, custom upholstered headboards, wet bars and natural materials like bamboo, sisal and rattan.

Décor in the studio and one-bedroom cottages includes vintage elements such as bamboo tortoise nightstands and locally sourced pieces, many from Kennebunkport's Hurlbutt Designs, and custom rope-wrapped surfboards from Kennebunkport's Gold Standard Woodworking.

The resort also will feature amenities including a lounge pool, cruiser bikes and outdoor living spaces.

Last year, Harrington bought the Colony Cottages, at 20 State Highway 3 in Hulls Cove, on Mount Desert Island. Since then, his firm has been investing $20 million to upgrade the property with the goal of opening as Salt Cottages the Fourth of July weekend.

Harrington began his career in the hotel business in 2005 with the purchase and redesign of Cottages at Cabot Cove in Kennebunkport.
