The fundraising push in the race to become Maine’s next governor has begun as Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler have announced their initial fundraising totals.
The Portland Press Herald reported Michaud announced raising $300,000 in the last 17 days while Cutler says he's raised more than $430,000 since the beginning of the year. Just how much Gov. Paul LePage has raised is not yet known and the totals reported by Cutler and Michaud came a day after the first reporting deadline with the Maine Ethics Commission. A final fundraising report by that agency is expected in about two weeks.
While none of the candidates have formally announced gubernatorial bids, some lawmakers are already lining up for Michaud's congressional seat, representing Maine's 2nd District. The Bangor Daily News reported Democratic state Sens. Troy Jackson and Emily Cain have filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to enter the race. On the Republican side, Assistant Minority Leader Alexander Willette has said he plans to file as a candidate in that race.
