Guilford plant to close

American Pride LLC will close its plant in Guilford and lay off roughly half of the plant's 18 employees. The remainder will be offered jobs at the company's sister plant, Maine Wood Turning in New Vineyard.

The plant will be closed over the next few months and its work consolidated in New Vineyard to deal with a drop in sales. The facilities make wood turnings for the craft, music and promotion industries, and had recently branched into hardwood flooring, though that product did not sell well because of the housing market slump, according to the Bangor Daily News. Laid off American Pride employees will be eligible for assistance from the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, the paper reported.

The closure follows the layoff of 90 employees at the True Textiles mill in Guilford.
