Minor league basketball possibly headed to Maine

A local investment group is expected this week to announce that Portland will be home to a minor league NBA team, according to the Portland Press Herald.

A press conference will be held Wednesday, at which the group -- including Bill Ryan Sr., chairman of TD Banknorth, his son Bill Ryan Jr., owner of Oxford Plains Speedway and former Celtics coach Jon Jennings -- is expected to announce it has been awarded a NBA Development League franchise for Portland. It's believed the press conference will include news that the Portland team will be affiliated with the Boston Celtics, though the Press Herald could not gain confirmation.

The local investment group said in January 2008 that it was seeking a NBA D-League franchise team. At the time, Ryan Sr. said "the success of the Sea Dogs and Pirates shows that Portland loves its professional sports."
