Hannaford breach unprecedented

The recent security breach at the grocery chain Hannaford Bros., based in Scarborough, is being held up as a first-of-its-kind crime.

During the breach, which began Dec. 7 and was discovered Feb. 27, 4.2 million customer credit and debit card numbers were stolen in transit. Rather than information stolen from a database, the Hannaford breach is said to be the first large scale theft of card data while the information is in transit, which is a much more difficult feat, according to the Associated Press.

This type of fraud is so new that, though the hack was still going on last month, Hannaford was found to be in compliance with security standards required by the Payment Card Industry, a coalition founded by credit card companies, the AP said.
