Hannaford ends three-year lull with new Mechanic Falls store
Hannaford Supermarkets on July 28 will open a 20,000-square-foot store in Mechanic Falls, the grocery chain’s first new store in Maine since 2015.
The supermarket and pharmacy at 28 Pigeon Hill Road will employ between 80 and 100 full-time and part-time workers, the company said in a news release.
To mark the store’s opening at 7 a.m., Hannaford will present prizes, food samples and gift cards for the first 200 customers inside the doors.
Hannaford last premiered a Maine store in North Berwick. That “small-format” store is about the same size as the Mechanic Falls one, according to the Hannaford website.
The Mechanic Falls store is in the Five Corners area at the intersection of Routes 11 and 26, about 10 miles west of Lewiston. Hannaford already operates stores in Auburn and Lewiston, as does its primary competitor, Shaw’s Supermarkets.
The new Hannaford branch will stock over 16,000 products, including locally sourced items from Pineland Farms, of New Gloucester; E.W. Mailhot Sausage Co., Lewiston; Maine Family Farm Meats, Portland; and Lucarelli’s Bread and Rolls, Livermore Falls.
Hannaford, founded in Portland in 1883, is headquartered in Scarborough and employs 26,000 people in New England and New York. With the addition of the Mechanic Falls location, the company operates 63 stores in Maine, and a total of 181.
The chain is owned by Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize, which has more than 6,500 stores worldwide. It is the world's fifth-largest grocery retailer and also owns the Food Lion, Stop & Shop and other regional chains in the United States.
