Hannaford Supermarkets has named a senior executive from its parent company as its next president, who will take over when Brad Wise retires this summer.
The Scarborough-based regional supermarket chain announced Wednesday that Michael Vail, currently the chief merchant and supply chain officer for Delhaize America and a longtime veteran of both companies, will succeed Wise, who is stepping down June 30.
"Brad's announcement of his retirement marks a transition in his distinguished and successful career with our company," Kevin Holt, chief executive officer of Delhaize America, said in a prepared statement. "During the next few months, Brad and Mike will work together to develop a smooth transition plan to ensure the continued forward momentum of our Hannaford strategic plan. I am grateful that we were able to tap into strong internal talent to ensure a seamless transition."
Wise, a 30-year-veteran of both companies, became Hannaford’s president in 2012 after serving as senior vice president of human resources at Delhaize America. He started his career at Hannaford in 1985 as a retail management trainee and went on to serve as a store manager and eventually as the company’s regional vice president of retail operations.
Vail has a similar history. Having worked for both companies for 29 years, Vail started at Hannaford as a retail management trainee and went on to serve a number of other roles, including store manager, district manager, category manager and director of deli merchandising. Prior to his most recent position, Vail was president and chief operating officer of Florida-based Sweetbay Supermarkets, another Delhaize-owned chain.
