Scarborough-based Hannaford Supermarkets on Tuesday said it was recalling its white American cheese, included freshly sliced cheese sold at the stores' deli counters, over concern about the possible presence of metal fragments.
The recall applies to purchases of the product between Sept. 8 and Oct. 8 at Hannaford stores.
Hannaford said in a news release that customers should not consume the item and may return it to a Hannaford store for a full refund. The company also said that no illnesses or injuries have been reported.
In response to a query from Mainebiz, a Hannaford spokeswoman said via email Wednesday that she doesn't have information about how much cheese has been returned or when and how the problem was discovered.
She also said the company alerted customers signed up to the Hannafords Rewards loyalty program who purchased the item and posted the recall notice on its website.
"Our goal is to raise awareness to people who shop at our stores," she added.
As a general rule, Hannaford says it "works closely with suppliers and government agencies to ensure the foods we carry are safe," and that any product sold through its stores that has been recalled by the producer is removed from shelves.
The cheese measure is Hannaford's second recall so far this month.
On Oct. 3, Hannaford recalled King Arthur Unbleached Flour in 5- and 25-pound packages due to the potential presence of E. coli bacteria. The retailer has an updated list of recalls on its website.
There is also a website for information about product recalls nationwide.
Hannaford Supermarkets operates 181 stores and employs more than 26,000 associates in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
By the end of 2019, Hannaford will have renovated 18 of its 63 stores in Maine, the Mainebiz Real Estate Insider reported in April.
