Saco-based PM Construction will be building out a 12,000-square-foot expansion to Hannaford Supermarkets’ Gray location at 130 Shaker Road, starting this fall.
The grocer, which is headquartered in Scarborough, said the new space will provide for larger produce, meat and seafood departments, as well as a greater variety of grab-and-go meals, and dairy and frozen foods.
The project will also expand the 30,000-square-foot store’s parking lot and pharmacy, add a second entrance and make room for more self-checkout registers. The store will remain fully open during the project, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
Todd Bullen, vice president of retail operations for Hannaford Supermarkets, said in a press release, “This expansion will offer our Gray customers an even better shopping experience while maintaining our commitment to fresh, quality food and dependable value. We thank our Gray customers for their loyalty and look forward to welcoming them to a newly enhanced store.”
In line with Hannaford’s focus on sustainability, the remodel will include enhancements to the store’s energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. According to the company, the grocery chain donates or diverts all foods at risk of going to waste so that none winds up in landfills. Hannaford donated 26 million pounds of food to hunger relief organizations in 2023.
The grocery chain employs nearly 30,000 across its 189 stores in the northeast and in New York. It operates 68 stores in Maine. The company was founded in Portland in 1883 and was acquired in 2000 by the Dutch-Belgian international food retailer Ahold Delhaize, which is headquartered in the Netherlands.
