Hannaford reports data breach

Scarborough-based grocery store chain Hannaford yesterday said a security breach has compromised 4.2 million customer credit and debit card numbers, so far leading to at least 1,800 cases of fraud.

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating what caused the data breach, which began Dec. 7 and was discovered Feb. 27, according to the Portland Press Herald. The breach hit 165 Hannaford stores in New England and New York, as well as its Sweetbay stores in Florida, the paper said.

No personal information, such as names, addresses and social security numbers, were stolen, the company said in a press release. The breach may have happened as data was sent over a wireless system from card-swiping machines to a server, investigators told The Wall Street Journal.
