Hannaford Supermarkets said Tuesday it is acquiring the Paradis Shop 'n Save Supermarkets locations in Fort Kent and Madawaska. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
Both stores are expected to start running under the new ownership this spring. Hannaford already supplies and supports the Paradis branches, as well as other Maine grocery stores branded with the Shop 'n Save name.
The Paradis family has been in the grocery business since founder Louis J. Paradis opened his first store, in Fort Kent, in 1947.
“The entire Paradis family is tremendously grateful to the Fort Kent and Madawaska communities, including the many associates and customers who have supported us for the past 77 years,” the family said in a news release.
“We’re confident that Hannaford will provide the same level of personalized service and outstanding products that make the Paradis shopping experience so special, while also maintaining our commitment to the community. We hope you will join us in welcoming Hannaford.”
The Fort Kent and Madawaska stores will offer store-brand offerings such as Taste of Inspirations, Hannaford and Nature’s Promise, as well as wide selections of items from local farms and producers. Customers can also take part in the My Hannaford Rewards discount program.
“We’ve long been committed to bringing the Fort Kent and Madawaska communities the high-quality, fresh products and exceptional service that are synonymous with Hannaford,” said Todd Bullen, vice president of retail operations for Hannaford.
“We look forward to further deepening our ties with these communities as we officially welcome the stores to the Hannaford banner.”
Hannaford Supermarkets was founded in Portland in 1883. Today, the company is based in Scarborough and has 68 stores in Maine and another 189 across New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. In all, the company has 30,000 employees.
Hannaford is part of Ahold Delhaize, a Dutch conglomerate with 6,500 stores in 11 countries.
