Hannaford to buy, close K'bunk market

Hannaford Bros. Co. is planning to buy and close the downtown Garden Street Market in Kennebunk in preparation for its new store at the former Stop & Shop.

The Scarborough-based supermarket chain yesterday announced it will buy Garden Street Market's long-term lease and close the business before the new Hannaford store opens May 9, according to Seacoast Online. Michael Norton, a Hannaford spokesman, said in a press release that Hannaford will offer comparable positions to Garden Street Market's 70-80 employees. Dan Bowen, who has owned Garden Street Market for 14 years, told the paper he was reluctant to try and compete against Hannaford, his former employer and Garden Street Market's wholesaler.

Kennebunk Town Manager Barry Tibbetts told the paper he is pleased there will be no layoffs, but that losing the market could hurt foot traffic in the downtown area.

Massachusetts-based Stop & Shop closed its only Maine location and laid off 140 employees in October. Hannaford announced it would buy the building and open a new store in December, employing 150 people.
