Hannaford will take over Scarborough space Shaw's is vacating

Hannaford store FILE PHOTO Hannaford plans to take over a space at 417 Payne Road in Scarborough, in what is now a Shaw's supermarket.

Hannaford said this week it will open a supermarket in the Payne Road location in Scarborough that Shaw's plans to close.

The Scarborough-based supermarket chain expects to start construction on the site in early 2023 and open the store in by summer 2023. The store is expected to employ about 150 full- and part-time associates.

As Mainebiz reported last week, Shaw's announced it will close the store, at 417 Payne Road, on Oct.8.

With the changeover, this will be Hannaford's second Scarborough location, giving the supermarket chain 186 stores total, including 65 in Maine.

Erika Dodge, Hannaford's director of external communications and community relations, confirmed the additional Scarborough store will occupy the space now leased by Shaw’s. The store is expected to be 58,000 square feet.

Hannaford's new site will be 2.3 miles from its other Scarborough location, in the Oakhill Plaza shopping center, and less than five miles from the headquarters on Pleasant Hill Road.

“We are proud to invest further in our state, bring new jobs to the area and strengthen our relationship with the community,” said Todd Bullen, vice president of operations for Hannaford Supermarkets.

In addition to the 65 stores in Maine, Hannaford, which was founded in Portland in 1883, has 120 stores in the Northeast, in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. In all, it has 30,000 employees.

Hannaford is part of Ahold Delhaize, a Dutch conglomerate with 6,500 stores in 11 countries.
