Hannaford's "green" market to be world's first

Hannaford Bros. Co. yesterday said it will build a supermarket in Augusta that meets the U.S. Green Building Council's highest environmental standard, claiming it would be first supermarket in the world to do so.

At a press conference yesterday, Hannaford president and CEO Ronald Hodge said the company will seek Platinum certification for the 49,000-square-foot store from the USGBC, which rates buildings according to its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system.

The store, planned for the former Cony High School site in Augusta, will include such features as vegetation on its roof, solar photovoltaic panels, energy-efficient lighting and an advanced recycling program, making the store 40% more energy-efficient than the industry standard, the Associated Press reported.

Hodge plans to break ground on the site sometime next year. Company representatives wouldn't specify when the project would be complete or how much it would cost.
