Police on Tuesday arrested a Harpswell woman suspected of embezzling around $200,000 from businesses and a youth football league in Maine and California.
The Bangor Daily News reported Carrie Richardson, 37, was charged in Maine with Class B felony theft for allegedly embezzling $80,000 while working as a bookkeeper at the Lewiston Ramada Inn, from January 2012 to January 2013.
Lewiston police Lt. Michael McGonagle told the paper Richardson would likely be transported from Cumberland County Jail, where she was held on $100,000 bail, to Lewiston to await a court appearance on the charges.
The paper reported that, at the time of her arrest, Richardson was also wanted by two California police agencies. The Escondido Police Department issued a warrant for Richardson’s arrest on charges of embezzling as much as $100,000 from the Escondido Pop Warner Football league, for which she was treasurer for three years. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department also suspects Richardson of embezzling around $45,000 at the North County Yamaha Shop in San Marcos, Calif., where she formerly worked.
A detective with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said that county would not seek to extradite Richardson for budgetary reasons. A Escondido Police Department detective declined to comment on his agency’s case against Richardson.
