Harvard Pilgrim gives $220K to Maine nonprofits for help during crisis

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation on Monday said it will donate $220,000 to three Maine nonprofits for community services during the COVID-19 crisis.

As part of a $3 million package of relief funding, the foundation has pledged $150,000 to Good Shepherd Food Bank, based in Auburn, to help fund statewide food access; $60,000 to the United Way of Eastern Maine, based in Bangor, for its COVID-19 Response Fund; and $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of Portland, to provide local food access for youth.

The foundation plans to fund a variety of initiatives across Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire for community services during the pandemic, according to a news release. The support ranges from providing locally sourced meals to families in need to expanding community-based testing for the novel coronavirus.

In addition, Harvard Pilgrim has launched a fund to provide grants of up to $10,000 for local nonprofits serving communities during the crisis. The money can be used for meals, delivery of meals, hygienic supplies such as hand sanitizer, and staffing to provide this support. The fund includes a tranche for services dedicated to older adults

“In this time of uncertainty and rapidly changing dynamics, it’s incredibly important that we provide support for our members and the medical community, as well as financial support to organizations that are assisting our neighbors in need,” Harvard Pilgrim Health Care CEO Michael Carson, said in a news release. “This is our initial community funding support to meet the immediate needs individuals and small businesses are facing in our communities.”

The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation awarded nearly $2.9 million in grants last year to 990 nonprofit organizations across the four-state region. Since its creation in 1980, the foundation has awarded $155 million in funds and resources.
