Imagine living with something that could kill you, but you have no idea. That’s the reality of uncontrolled high blood pressure. It’s a silent killer that can cause disease, disability and death.

Contrary to popular belief, the American Heart Association not only fights cardiovascular disease. The national organization educates and provides resources to prevent strokes, and Mainebiz is proud to sponsor the Maine Heart Walk on May 21 and join the fight against heart disease, hypertension and strokes.

Participating or donating to the Maine Heart Walk in Portland raises funds to save lives from heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers in the nation, respectively.

And it's working: Since the inception of the Heart Walk, mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and stroke have decreased by 45%, according to the AHA.

"Every walker who joins, every dollar donated, means more research, more people trained in lifesaving CPR, more medical breakthroughs and more champions for equitable health," according to the Maine chapter.

This year’s walk will take place starting at the Back Cove Trail parking lot, with a pre-walk celebration at 9 a.m. emceed by WPOR 101.9’s Courtney Ross and Channel 8 WMTW’s Kathleen Jordan. The walk is slated to end at 11 a.m.

The Heart Walk funds science that gives health care providers the tools they need when it counts – in the moments when someone’s life is at risk. It also celebrates heart and stroke survivors while honoring the lives that have been lost.

Over the past 30 years, funds raised through the Heart Walk have:

  • Pioneered healthy food policies in schools
  • Improved technology that’s saved lives from heart disease and stroke
  • Developed science-backed guidelines to improve the quality of care in hospitals
  • Uncovered CPR techniques, making it easier for bystanders to respond

Join your friends, family and co-workers to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. We're all tied to heart disease and stroke in some way. By registering for the Heart Walk you're taking the first step to save lives.
