Health care industry wins $11.5M boost

Maine's health care industry will receive $11.5 million in federal economic stimulus money, including funds to expand the HealthInfoNet program, Gov. John Baldacci announced today.

The federal government will provide $6.5 million in federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand Maine's HealthInfoNet to all health care providers in the state, according to a press release from the governor's office. The health information exchange launched as a demonstration project last July and has been called the largest and most comprehensive clinical health information exchange in the country. Per federal requirements, Maine will establish an Office of the State Coordinator for Health Information Technology, which will oversee the development of HealthInfoNet, as well as coordinate with the state's MaineCare program and the ConnectME Authority on a broadband expansion project.

Maine is also receiving $4.9 million to accelerate credentialing for Maine's health care work force as well as create high-demand jobs such as Certified Nurse Assistants. The Maine Department of Labor estimates that 400 Mainers will achieve credentialing through this program.
