Heavy traffic expected on turnpike for summer season start

Maine Turnpike Authority expects a 3.1% increase in traffic over last year for the four-day Memorial Day weekend, which marks Maine’s unofficial start to the summer vacation season.

Turnpike officials estimate approximately 960,000 vehicles will travel the turnpike this Friday through Monday, with Friday seeing the heaviest volumes between 4-8 p.m. northbound. Monday will be especially busy at the York Toll Plaza southbound, where more than 57,000 vehicles are expected to depart the state, with the heaviest traffic expected between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Heading into Memorial Day weekend, gas prices are increasing for the first time in four weeks, according to AAA. The national average for a gallon of regular gas is now about $2.37 — nearly three cents more than a week ago and nine cents more than a year ago, AAA reported. At least 36 states saw price increases this week.

AAA’s comparison of gas prices shows Maine is slightly lower than than national average, reporting these average price: $2.34 per gallon for regular, $2.58 for mid-grade, $2.79 for premium and $2.56 for diesel. All prices are down slightly from the same time a year ago.
