A recent survey by the Natural Resources Council of Maine found high satisfaction levels among the state's 600 electric vehicle owners, MPBN reported Tuesday.
Dylan Voorhees, the NRCM's director of clean energy, told MPBN that attitudes toward electric vehicles have become more accepting in recent years. In the survey, electric vehicles included hybrids, which have a backup gasoline tank.
The environmental group mailed surveys to the 600 registered electric vehicle owners in Maine in late 2014, and more than 40% responded. Of the respondents, 93% said they would recommend their vehicle to a friend, family member or colleague.
However, sales of electric vehicles in Maine aren’t huge. They represent just over 1% of the cars on the road. Nationally, it's less than 1%.
Barry Woods, director at Electric Mobility NE, a Maine-based electric vehicle consultant, told MPBN that sales of electric vehicles have been slowing compared to the last three years, which saw year-over-year growth of 100%. Part of the reason is the low price of gasoline, Woods said.
He expects electric cars to become more attractive in the future with an increase in charging stations around Maine and expected improvements in batteries.
