Maine deemed one of ‘least tax friendly’ states by Kiplinger

Maine was among the 10 "least tax friendly" states in the nation, according to an online tax comparison for the 50 states released Tuesday by the financial newsletter Kiplinger, the Sun Journal reported.

A seemingly conflicting report was issued a day earlier by the nonpartisan Truth in Accounting think tank, which suggested Maine’s overall tax burden was down by 41% on average for Maine taxpayers.

Rob Poindexter, a spokesman for House Minority Leader Ken Fredette (R-Newport) told the Sun Journal on Tuesday that both reports were valid, saying the state’s tax burden is less due to reducing the debt the state owes through pension reform, repaying hospitals and not expanding Medicaid.

The Maine Republican Party is planning to push for a 2016 statewide ballot question that would ask voters if they want to phase out the state income tax.
