A larger percentage of Maine students graduated high school in 2012, according to the latest figures, though nearly one-third of the state's schools lag behind federal standards.
The state's Department of Education released the latest numbers Monday, showing the four-year graduation rate statewide to increase 1.5% over last year, to 85.34%.
Since 2009, when the state began using a federally required measurement system called the four-year Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate, the state has seen graduation rates increase by nearly 5%.
Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen said the next step is to look closely at the data and find which schools are performing well — and what they're doing to achieve that — and which are not.
While the statewide graduation rate rose, 48 of the state's 133 high schools remained below the 83% federal target graduation rate. Nearly 40% — or 53 — of schools in the state saw no improvement in graduation rates, according to the press release.
