High winds damage Casco Systems building under construction

The 20,300-square-foot building, still under construction, was severely damaged when high winds last week blew down most of the roof trusses.

Most of a 20,300-square-foot building in Cumberland that was under construction for Casco Systems was blown down last week by winds reaching 60 miles per hour.

“The high winds caused a structural failure of some sort, which caused a cascading failure, and unfortunately a good portion of the structure was damaged,” Casco Systems President Kevin Mahoney told The Forecaster

Casco Systems was not directly involved in the building’s structural design or construction. The engineering and system integration firm is located in a 4,000-square-foot building in Cumberland, and plans to house manufacturing and research and development operations in the new building.

Construction will continue. Project manager Jim Schmidt told the Forecaster the impact to the $3 million structure “looks like a bigger mess than it is.”

On its Facebook page, the company said that the project is expected to be back on track “in short order.”

“The really good news is that it happened in the middle of the night and there were no injuries,” the company stated on Facebook.

The Route 100 building will provide class A office space for a team of engineers, technicians, project managers and business associates; and will feature an expanded “Smart Grid” laboratory, fabrication area, team lounge, full kitchen and wellness room.
