A wind developer proposing a 39-turbine farm in Highland Plantation has withdrawn its application with state regulators, citing a need for more time to address concerns.
Highland Wind LLC, a subsidiary of former Gov. Angus King's firm, Independence Wind, yesterday withdrew its application with the Land Use Regulation Commission with plans to resubmit it in the future, according to a press release. Highland Wind submitted the application in December and received feedback from government agencies, including the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, two weeks ago. The department found that the wind farm would threaten the habitat of a number of animals in the Somerset County plantation, including the endangered northern bog lemming and Roaring Brook mayfly, according to the Morning Sentinel. "Taking another few months to carefully evaluate these concerns is well worth the time," King said.
Last month, LURC also voted to invoke an exception in Maine law that allows them to more thoroughly scrutinize whether the wind farm's associated facilities, including generators and buildings, negatively impact scenery.
