After three years of negotiations, the city of South Portland has finalized a lease with a company planning to turn the former Army National Guard armory into a movie sound stage.
City councilors voted unanimously yesterday to lease the vacant armory to Fore River Sound Stage LLC, which plans to turn it into a sound stage for filming movies and television shows, according to the Portland Press Herald. The city bought the building for $650,000 in bankruptcy court in 2006 and has been negotiating with the company, led by Eric Matheson of Cape Elizabeth and Mark Rockwood of Portland, over details of the lease agreement, according to The Forecaster. The lease is effective June 1, with a base rate of $550 a month and the first six months free, according to the Press Herald. The building does not have bathrooms and needs major repairs.
Matheson, a film technician, has built sets for "Empire Falls," "Amistad" and "Message in a Bottle." He and Rockwood said having a sound stage in Maine will draw more major movie production companies to the state.
