Hodgdon to build Air Force vessels
Hodgdon Defense Composites, an affiliate of East Boothbay-based Hodgdon Yachts, will soon begin building U.S. Air Force rescue vessels on the Bath waterfront.
The Bath City Council approved the company's 2.5-year lease at city-owned property, where Hodgdon will build jet-ski-like rescue vessels for the Air Force's Special Command, according to The Times Record. The company will subcontract with North Carolina-based Rapid Response Technology, which designed the vessel, to build the Greenough Advanced Rescue Craft. The vessels are designed to withstand being dropped from aircraft into the water. Though Rapid Response is still finalizing a contract for the vessels, Hodgdon has received advance authorization to begin construction as early as mid-January. The company hopes to build four a year.
Tim Hodgdon, president of Hodgdon Yachts, established the defense division in 2004. In 2008, the company made a patrol boat prototype for the Department of Defense Special Operations Command. That same year, the company expanded into a new facility in Richmond to build yacht interiors for larger vessels.
