Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Waterstone Properties Group has landed two pop-up retail store tenants at the Kittery Outlet Center, with another on the way later this month.
Regatta Great Outdoors Factory Store, a British clothing brand, opened at the mall in October and plans to remain through early spring. It will be joined today by Sea Bags, a Portland-based maker of totes and accessories made from recycled sails, which will stay open through the end of the year. A spokeswoman for Waterstone Properties told Mainebiz that the Kittery Outlet Center will welcome Onyx Boutique as another pop-up retailer adjacent to Sea Bags, most likely as of mid-November.
"Kittery continues to be a strong retail market for both tourists and local residents, with heavy traffic from summer through the holiday shopping season," said Josh Levy, Waterstone's co-founding principal. "We are excited to welcome Regatta Great Outdoors Factory Store and Sea Bags to our lineup of popular retailers to offer shoppers even more variety and access to their favorite brands."
Waterstone Properties, based in Needham, Mass., has a portfolio of more than 300 national and local tenants in 15 states. Its Maine portfolio includes the Rock Row mixed-use complex, the Scarborough Gallery shopping mall and 64,000 square feet available for lease in Bangor, at 6 Bangor Mall Blvd.
Regatta is currently offering 50% to 80% off everything in its Kittery factory store, while Sea Bags is selling its products at full price in that location.
"That is different from the past, since we now have a Factory Store [at 25 Custom House Wharf, in Portland] and sell all our discounted products there, typically at 20% off," Sea Bags CEO Don Oakes told Mainebiz. He said Sea Bags is taking space in Kittery previously occupied by Alaina Marie.
Sea Bags' pop-up store in Kittery will be staffed with three to four employees, Oakes said. He noted that this marks Sea Bags' third pop-up at the Kittery Outlet Center, after successes in 2018 and 2019.
"It's a great time to be there and take advantage of the holiday traffic that the outlets generate," said Oakes, who was honored as a 2022 Mainebiz Business Leader of the Year in the Large Business category.
Asked about any plans beyond a pop-up arrangement, Oakes said, "At this point we are not considering a permanent space there as we currently have two stores just across the river in Portsmouth, not to mention our stores up the road in Ogunquit and Kennebunkport."
Lauren Greene, head of marketing for the Regatta Great Outdoors Factory Store, said the response to the Kittery pop-up has been "incredible."
"We've already seen repeat customers checking in each week for the latest deals and new merchandise, as we are growing our offerings daily. It's been a great success," she said.
The Kittery Outlet Center is located at 340 U.S. Route 1, and competes with the nearby Kittery Premium Outlets, which is owned by Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc.
