Work is underway to open a ninth Portland Pie location after the craft pizza maker acquired a Ricetta’s pizzeria in a deal that closed Oct. 14, Jeff Perkins, Portland Pie’s owner and CEO, told Mainebiz.
Portland Pie is leasing the Falmouth eatery formerly occupied by Ricetta’s, at 240 U.S. Route 1, in the Shops at Falmouth Village. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but about $50,000 was invested into the retrofit, according to Perkins.
Craig Church and Kirk Butterfield of KW Commercial/Magnusson Balfour brokered the deal.
“We’ve always wanted to be in Falmouth,” said Perkins. “But we knew that with Ricetta’s, another great Maine company that has had so much a community connection, it didn’t make sense for us to try to open there, with both of us doing similar things.”
The set-up as a pizza restaurant made it for a smooth transition.
“It was basically the same thing we do,” Perkins said. “We painted the walls and changed a few thing and hung up our artwork, but it really was set up wonderfully. We were able to use almost everything they had there.”
The goal is to open the week of Nov. 21. Being so close to Thanksgiving, it’s not certain if a soft opening with friends and family will be held first or a launch into full operations, Perkins said.
Portland Pie was founded in 1997 at a small shop in Portland and is now headquartered in South Portland.
Its menu has expanded to include items beyond pizza, including craft beer.
The space of about 6,000 square feet seats about 180 people. It has a commercial kitchen and a catering kitchen.
“Having a centralized catering kitchen is something we’re excited about,” Perkins said.
The Falmouth location has hired the Ricetta’s employees who wanted to stay on — about three-quarters of that staff — and brought in new hires. Once it's fully up and running, between 35 and 50 people will be employed.
Portland Pie’s most recent locations before this were in Windham, which opened over a year ago, and Bangor, which opened more than two years ago. It also has locations in Biddeford, Scarborough, Portland, Westbrook, Brunswick and Waterville.
