Home sales and prices down

Sales of existing single-family homes in Maine dropped 14% last month from the same time last year, according to data released Wednesday.

The Maine Association of Realtors reported that 610 homes sold in April, down from 708 in April of 2008, according to a release from the Maine Real Estate Information System. The median sales price fell 10% to $160,000.

For the quarter ending April 30, both sales and prices were down about 16% from the same time last year. Sales during that period fell in every county but Piscataquis, which saw a nearly 23% rise, and Washington, which recorded steady sales, the paper reported. Prices rose in only Knox and Aroostook counties.
