Poll shows divide over grid plans

Most Mainers are on the fence about the better way to increase grid reliability, according to a poll released yesterday by GridSolar, a Portland-based energy company proposing a grid upgrade using solar power.

The poll, conducted by Brunswick-based Potholm Group, asked 500 Mainers whether they would prefer a grid upgrade based on small-scale, solar power generators or Central Maine Power Co.'s $1.5 billion transmission line upgrade. Both plans are before the Maine Public Utilities Commission.

According to a release from Savvy Inc., GridSolar's public relations firm, 42% of the respondents said they did not know or had no opinion, 38% said they preferred the solar plan and 20% backed CMP's plan. The survey had a 4% margin of error.
