Home sales climb 8%

Maine home sales last month rose nearly 8% compared to the same month last year, while the median sales price dropped.

A total of 967 existing single-family homes sold in September, a 7.56% jump over September 2010, according to a press release from the Maine Real Estate Information System Inc. The median sales price, however, fell 6.42% to $159,000. Real estate broker Mike LePage of RE/MAX Heritage in Yarmouth said the state is weathering the poor housing market well, with a 14.87% year-to-date increase in home sales over 2010.

In the Northeast, home sales rose 6.8%, while the median price dropped 3.3% to $229,400. Home sales increased 12.2% nationally, and the price fell 3.9% to $165,600.
