Judge rejects lottery contract appeal

Scientific Games in Gardiner will hold onto a $35 million state lottery contract, after a Superior Court judge ruled against an appeal from a competing company.

In his order filed Thursday, Justice Robert Murray rejected the appeal by Greece-based Intralot, finding that the state Bureau of General Services properly invalidated a contract to print scratch tickets awarded to the company last year, the Kennebec Journal reported. The state in October 2010 awarded the six-year contract for ticket printing and related services to Intralot, but current vendor Scientific Games successfully appealed the decision, arguing the applications were scored unfairly. Scientific Games is based in Georgia but has an office in Gardiner. In its appeal, Intralot argued the state would save $3.6 million by going with the company.

Local officials Sen. Earle McCormick and Rep. Steve Hanley also sought the invalidation of the contract award to Intralot, arguing the state "overlooked its own requirement that there must be local personnel handling these functions."
