Home sales in Maine dropped 21% in September, but the median sales price rose nearly 2%.
A total of 899 single-family homes were sold in Maine in September, a 21.07% drop from the same month in 2009, according to a press release from the Maine Real Estate Information System Inc. The median sales price, however, inched up 1.74% to $169,900. For the three months of July through September, home sales in Maine fell 20.55% compared with the same period last year, while the median sales price increased 3.03%. Most counties have experienced a double-digit drop in homes sales since last year, with Penobscot County experiencing the largest drop -- 28.57% -- during the three-month period (for more, see "By the numbers," below.)
Nationally, home sales fell 19.5% in September compared with September 2009, while the median price dropped 1.9% to $172,600. Sales in the Northeast decreased 20.8%, and the median sales price fell 1.4% to $239,200, according to the release.
