Home sales near 50% jump

Maine homes sales jumped nearly 50% in November, marking the sixth consecutive monthly increase.

Last month, 1,025 existing single-family homes were sold, a 48.5% increase over November 2008, according to a press release from the Maine Real Estate Information System Inc. The median sales price, however, continued its downward trend over last year, dropping 4.8% from $172,415 in November 2008 to $164,000 last month.

Nationally, home sales rose 42.1%, while the median price decreased 4.4% to $171,900. Sales were stronger in the Northeast, posting a 52.7% jump, but the median price fell 13.1% to $223,400, according to the release.
