L-A airport expansion gets $500,000

A federal spending bill signed last week includes $500,000 for expansion work at the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport.

Rep. Mike Michaud Tuesday presented airport officials with the $500,000 check, which will fund design and engineering work for a 1,000-foot runway expansion, according to the Sun Journal. Airport Manager Rick Cloutier said environmental impact studies should begin soon. Once design work has finished, the airport will seek federal money for construction, which will cost $10 million to $12 million. Construction could begin by late 2011.

The expansion will allow the airport to accommodate 737-sized aircraft and could lead to regular passenger service, according to the paper.
