Home sales surge in April, up 13.7%

Single-family home sales for April far outpaced last year, surging 13.7% to 937 homes sold.

That's up from 824 homes sold during April 2012, according to the latest numbers published by the Maine Real Estate Information System.

Bart Stevens, MREIS president, said in a prepared statement that buyers have been attracted by low mortgage rates and many are investing in camps, cottages and other "recreational properties."

Stevens also noted that, in many markets, multiple offers for a property are becoming more frequent.

The median price for those homes also was up over 4% in April, from $167,950 last year to $174,900 this year.
