Hostess workers eligible for training help

The U.S. Department of Labor has ruled that the nearly 18,000 Hostess workers hit by the company's bankruptcy across 48 states, including Maine, will be eligible for assistance from state workforce agencies.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the nearly 500 Hostess employees in Maine — 370 at a Biddeford plant — will be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance, which provides assistance to workers whose jobs were lost as a result of trade-related factors.

A U.S. Department of Labor investigation found that imported baked goods were an important contribution to the company's downfall.

Eligible workers will be contacted by state workforce agencies and those who qualify might get re-employment help and training in new occupational skills and could receive job search and relocation allowances, according to the Bangor Daily News.
