Hostess workers strike in Biddeford
A strike that began Friday at Hostess plants in Pennsylvania now has over 300 workers at the company's Biddeford bakery taking to the picket lines.
The Journal Tribune reported that the Maine workers joined workers at 12 other Hostess plants in the strike that began after the company imposed pay and health care cuts it says are necessary to keep it afloat.
Hostess Brands Inc. filed for bankruptcy in January and a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge last month upheld the company's motion to impose the new contract that cuts pay by 8% and reduces benefits, the paper reported.
The company's chief executive told the paper in an that "there will be no renegotiation" of the contract and the company said in a statement Friday that a widespread strike would lead the company to sell its assets and lay off its 18,300 employees at 36 bakeries and 565 distribution centers across the country.
A union representative told the paper that workers would accept certain concessions but that the company raised larger issues by stopping payments into the workers' pension funds through January.
The company that was founded in 1930, based in Irving, Texas, produces baked goods including Twinkies, SnoBalls, Suzy Qs and Wonder Bread.
