After dropping plans for a new Windham hotel amid the economic collapse in 2008, one hotel developer is close to reviving the 50-room hotel concept.
The Lakes Region Weekly reported that Wells-based Heyland Development, which owns a MicroTel extended-stay hotel in York, is in the last stages of local approval for a 50-room MainStay hotel it plans to build starting in spring of 2013.
The paper reported that a similar North Windham project from Heyland received approval in 2007 but was ditched at the start of the economic crash in 2008.
The paper reported that another developer also is eyeing Windham for a hotel project on Route 302. Martin Lippman told the paper that he has plans for a 70-to-80-room hotel there.
Both proposals have sparked reactions from local hotel owners, who in public hearings on the proposal were split on whether there's enough of a market in the off-season for new hotels in Windham.
