Snowe bids farewell as new delegation settles in

As outgoing U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe delivered her farewell address Thursday after a 34-year congressional career, Maine's incoming federal lawmakers announced the committees they will join after the new year.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Snowe delivered a 30-minute speech to the Senate, expressing her worry that the U.S. Senate is "losing the art of legislating."

In preparing to take Snowe's Senate seat on Jan. 3, The Associated Press reported that Sen.-elect reported Angus King announced late Tuesday that he will have a seat on the Senate's Armed Services, Intelligence, Budget and Rules committees.

First District U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced Thursday that she will serve on the House Appropriations Committee. Pingree said in a press release that she plans to request appointments to the committee's Defense and Agriculture subcommittees.

The BDN reported that Pingree is the first Maine legislator to serve on Appropriations in 40 years, since 2nd District U.S. Rep. William Hathaway.

That district's current representative, Mike Michaud, announced last week that he will serve as the ranking member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, according to the BDN.

Maine's senior Sen. Susan Collins most recently served on the Senate's Homeland Security, Appropriations and Armed Services committees and the Special Committee on Aging. Those appointments will change, but Collins told reporters she expects to remain on Appropriations.
