Houlton broadband co. acquires ISP

Pioneer Broadband in Houlton is acquiring another Internet service provider in Presque Isle.

Pioneer has announced an agreement to acquire Aroostook Internet for undisclosed terms, according to a press release from the company. The Houlton company has provided rural Maine with high-speed Internet, webhosting, data center and IT services since 2001, and the acquisition will expand its coverage from 50 locations to more than 80. Pioneer's service area will reach from the Lubec area to Fort Kent and Madawaska, according to the release. Earlier this year, Pioneer completed a new fiber-optic cable from its data center in Houlton to New Brunswick, making it the state's only ISP with a connection to the Canadian Internet backbone, according to its release.

Founded in 1996, Aroostook Internet provides dial-up, high-speed wireless and DSL Internet services to northern Maine.
