House nixes bill to expand insurance options

The Maine House of Representatives yesterday rejected a bill to allow out-of-state health insurers to sell individual policies in Maine.

The 82-63 vote happened after a heated debate between opponents and supporters of the bill. Supporters argued the legislation would allow for more competitive prices in Maine, but opponents worried the bill would allow out-of-state insurers to avoid state oversight and to cherry-pick the healthiest applicants, leaving the riskiest pool to be covered by Maine-based insurers and therefore raise those prices more, according to the Associated Press.

The bill to allow insurers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont to sell in Maine was sent out of the Committee on Insurance and Finance Services with an ought-not-to-pass report. The bill will next be considered by the Senate.
