State workers face 5% pay cut

Legislators yesterday tentatively agreed to a 5% across-the-board cut for all state employees effective Oct. 1, according to WGAN.

Members of the Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs chose the pay cut over other proposals that would have instituted unpaid holidays for state workers and curbed merit and longevity pay. The appropriations committee is still considering a requirement that workers contribute to the cost of their health-insurance premiums, WGAN reported.

The committee is working through the final pieces of the state's $5.8 billion budget. The full Legislature will most likely act on the measures next week.
