House rejects LePage income tax repeal bill

The Democrat-led House of Representatives has rejected Gov. Paul LePage’s proposal to hold a statewide referendum on whether to eliminate the income tax by 2020.

LePage and other Republican lawmakers criticized Democrats for rejecting the measure, arguing that Maine voters should have a say on the matter. They also argued that LePage intends to transfer Maine’s tax burden to tourists by expanding the state's sales tax base.
