How Maine stacks up as a place to retire

WalletHub map Map / WalletHub TK

Out of all the places in the United States to retire, Vacationland holds its own at No. 15 in a new barometer by personal finance website WalletHub.

Florida, land of golf courses and sunshine, tops the list at No. 1, while Kentucky is dead last at No. 50.

While Maine was No. 15 overall, the state with the country’s top median age received top billing for quality of life.

The category includes points for access to scenic byways, shoreline mileage and the percentage of residents who do favors for their neighbors  —  all boxes that Maine easily ticks.

The Pine Tree State also ranks among the top five states for museums per capita and lowest property crime rates.

To determine the best states to spend one’s golden years in — or to avoid — WalletHub researchers looked at 46 key metrics from tax rates to bingo halls per capita.

Maine ranked No. 20 for health care and No. 33 for affordability.

Elsewhere in New England, New Hampshire stood out at No. 7 while Vermont was No. 17, Massachusetts No. 23, Connecticut Non. 29 and Rhode Island near the bottom at No. 44.
